*Today’s Q & A is a discussion between God and I this morning, He is so wise! Here is our conversation, in a nutshell:
Q. God, Is it ever possible for love to “just not be enough” in a relationship, what more could we need?
A. Well… yes and no. It all depends on your definition of “love”. You could have it all, or be living in the lack of love, it all depends on you.
“What is “love” to you? Is it a feeling, or is it a state of being?”
The Origin of My Question
Last night, my oldest children and I sat down to watch that new movie with Miley Cyrus. The one with the stormy beach scenes, the buff volleyball player, and the baby sea turtles. While hers and Greg Kinnear’s acting was excellent, I found the story line lacking, and actually very depressing. Not for just the obvious reasons; lost trust, misguided teens, alcoholism, theft, death… What was most depressing to me, was that I found the writers not-so-subtle hints to marriage and the indifference that most couples have towards it borderline offensive! It wasn’t due to the reality of divorce, I agree with the writer that society today is much to much indifferent in the area of marriage. What I found most offensive was the fact that the parents of the son and daughter in the movie had divorced for “irreconcilable differences”, and their go-to phrase to the children was… “Baby, sometimes love just isn’t enough.”
I Get Angry
There is only one thing that I will allow myself to get angry over… really, really angry. It is when someone disrespects or speak out against the Word of God, especially from a platform where people are respecting them. For instance Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Castro, unclean Priests and Pastors, Celebrities, etc. I allow the anger, for it motivates me toward righteousness. It fuels my fire to keep me going, and it keeps me preaching and fighting against the “religious tolerances” found in these modern times.
Not only is the abuse of positional leadership offensive to me, it is offensive to God. Scripture says that false leaders will be held doubly accountable for their sins, having lead others on the path to hell along with them. Men and women who choose to teach unrighteousness have exposed someone somewhere to their Anti-Christ message, and they now have latched on to the seed of unrighteous thought, and it has become their own. Hitler was famous for saying, “What luck for rulers, that men do not think.”
“What would happen if we started seeing ourselves AS love, instead of “in love”?
Love is a State of Being
Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us, but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that. Eph 5:1 & 2 MSG
God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 1 John 4:16
As long as you continue to see yourself “in love”, defined by all of its butterflies, ooey-gooey romance, high one minute, low the next- love will NEVER be enough! But this emotional roller coaster of endorphin filled craziness IS NOT LOVE. This is infatuation pure and simple. Infatuation will never keep you married past about five years, and definitely not into your Golden Years. In this case “love” or whatever you may call it… just isn’t enough.
Love, true love however isn’t an emotion or a feeling. True love is a state of being. I would challenge you today to begin your day by saying to yourself, “Today I am going to walk as love, not just be in love. Today I am going to walk as Christ walked.”
Consider Joshua’s plea… “Love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” Joshua 22:5
Divorce is no trifling matter, marriage is not a indifferent institution. I have said it before, and I still believe it “Marriage is forever, love is a choice.”
Choose to be love today!
Father God, thank You for Your wisdom. Thank You for showing me today, that it is up to us to walk “as” love and not just be “in” love. You call us to be IN YOU, and IN YOU we imitate and exemplify love. Thank You Jesus for coming to earth and dying on the cross, in order to show us how TO LIVE really live… AS LOVE! Thank You Lord for always answering my questions and giving wisdom to our world, Your world. We love You, and choose to walk in You today, In Your Son Jesus’ name AMEN!
