SQUEEZING God Out of Our Lives

Squeezing God out of our lives, leaves us being nothing but the rind

Put the Nintendo DOWN

I like to consider myself a reasonable mother, lots of work… lots of play. But WORK will always come first. Today was different however, today as a family (me, my 13 year old, and my 8 year old) decided to read God’s Word together BEFORE our day. It was quiet in the house, and while I am normally up for hours before them reading and Cadillacing (like a Cadillac cruises on the road) along in the Word, I haven’t made a habit of teaching THEM to make reading the Word a morning habit for themselves. While we usually do Bible Studies, and talk about God all the time, this was different, this was timely.

“Mom… can I play my Nintendo- I have just gotten to the NEXT level?” Was what I woke up to at 6:30 am. First, as I had been up late the night before I said, “Um, lets snuggle…zzzzz” Then when I came back to consciousness, and saw that my 13 year old was staring at me waiting to play, I said “Hold on, let’s get our Bibles FIRST.”

Reading the Bible With Your Kids

Together, we sat on the couch and I gave my son a copy of The Message Bible. I had the King James Version and since the versions are so different I read mine first. We talked about it, and then we read his version. Since the Message Version is an easier to understand version, we compared the two translations together and read in the Word about what it means to be “Christians”. Mine read:

15Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

His read:

Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world—wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important—has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out—but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.

We also read 1 John 3 Together (MSG):

People conceived and brought into life by God don’t make a practice of sin. How could they? God’s seed is deep within them, making them who they are. It’s not in the nature of the God-begotten to practice and parade sin. Here’s how you tell the difference between God’s children and the Devil’s children: The one who won’t practice righteous ways isn’t from God, nor is the one who won’t love brother or sister. A simple test. MSG

SQUEEZING God Out of Your Life Makes You a LEMON

Talking with my son about the things of God started our day out on the right track. It was nice for me, because there were things in the scripture that as a mom I probably harp to him about. You know… “BE NICE! Don’t DO that! Do this!” But instead of me “harping” he read it for himself, by THE authority (the Bible), and I just sat back and let the Word do the convicting. Isn’t that the way it is supposed to work… for everybody? After we were done reading, we prayed and after we prayed, he conquered that next level!

Having work to do, places to go and people to see are all fruits of the love that we have with God. These “responsibilities” are only made manifest THROUGH the time that we have spent doing right and living in right ways. The bottom-line is without God we would have nothing to do- so put Him first in ALL that you DO!

When you LOVE the world, and put everything that you have into it, you will be putting all your eggs into a basket that will eventually disappear. Leaving you fruitless and void of all spiritual things. Just like that lemon… well hey, aren’t cars that have no value called “lemons”… maybe the life has been SQUEEZED out of them too!

Have a blessed day friends as you go forward in your giving, giving, giving to others!

Love always your friend,

Jessica
