It’s Time to Chillax… Day 4: Praying to the Father

Ask, Seek, Knock!

A few weeks ago, the pressure of living on a strict budget got me down. Ordinarily, I would have been worry free and not concerned at all about circumstances- but the enemy weaseled himself in, and I let him shape my prayers into worries… instead of the other way around.

As I was driving home I had a break-down moment. Crying, blabbering, whining to God (and my husband) about the situation. I was more frustrated than mad. After all, as far as I had understood it you should be able to PRAY and get results! My conversation with God went kind of like this “Aren’t I supposed to pray God and ASK You for what I need as a daughter of the King… AND GET RESULTS? Aren’t I supposed to live by faith and by covenant ALONE? Haven’t I been doing everything You have asked of me? WHY then is their lack… why is there need… how am I failing in our relationship??? AHHHHH!*SOB*”

Well… after I had laid it all out- the need that we had, the concerns that I had, the reconfirmation to myself who I was in Christ- by the end of the day, ALL the need was filled! The Lord revealed to me that I had a few things left to learn, in the area of prayer!  The Lord provided for us a complete set of new tires, extra money that was coming to us and as for me… I GULPED, and said THANKS, lesson learned!

What I Learned From This Episode:

  1. We, as human beings, wait TOO long to talk to God. We let things get OUT-OF-CONTROL, THEN go to Him to ask.
  2. God is always listening.
  3. We need to KNOW who we are in Christ.
  4. Sometimes these “frustrating” situations are moments of opportunity. We have a better grasp of our ability when we are able to “voice” our standing in Him- not just to Him but to us and the enemy as well.
  5. Things CAN turn in an INSTANT! [Read Job 42:10]

Today, we are going to cover the “Lord’s Prayer”. Many children are taught to recite it and memorize it- but what happens when that is NOT enough? It is good for us- because when we memorize scripture we are able to become grounded in faith, but what we need as Christians is to begin to understand the thought and intent behind the prayer. We need to EMBODY HOW to pray to the Father and, as our brother Job did so long ago- walk in COMPLETE restoration… immediately.

“What things so ever you desire, when you pray, believe that you will receive them, and you shall have them” Mark 11:24

DAY 4: Matthew 6: 7-15 KJV & MSG Parallel…

King James:

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye:

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

The Message Version:

“The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:

Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who you are.
Set the world right;
Do what’s best— as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
You’re in charge!
You can do anything you want!
You’re ablaze in beauty!
Yes. Yes. Yes.

“In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can’t get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others. If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God’s part.”

Our Father in Heaven desires to TALK with us, He desires a relationship. He does not want to be our “band-aid, a self-help tool, a resource, or a genie” He desires to be THE ONLY SOURCE for us. How do you put God first and start praying and seeing results? GO TO GOD AND HIS WORD FIRST, then TRUST that what He is telling you IS THE WORD OF GOD. As long as GOD is “god” in our lives- we haven’t made Him #1 and we are trusting Him “LAST” NOT first.

Preventative or Prescribed?

What is better exercising  1 hour a day, or taking a pill for diabetes? Is it better to take a multi-vitamin supplement today, or a prescribed blood pressure pill tomorrow? As long as we think “prescribed”  vs “preventative” we will be stuck in horrible situations- crying out to God for help, and NOT seeing anything happen! It is the TAIL wagging the dog!

In her 20’s Cassie began to feel empowered by her ability to make money and take care of herself.

So is it TOO late?

Is it ever too late for God to turn our situations around? NO! He is the Redeemer, Restorer, He is Omnipresent! He is ALWAYS available and READY to be there for us. It takes humility on our part, to admit that we have put things ahead of Him, but here is a story to illustrate how praying POST incident works:

When Cassie* was a little girl she had severe abuse issues growing up. She consistently found herself leaving the house to get away from her “family”. Bouncing from place to place- she eventually found herself living in a shelter, getting a job, and making her own money. In her 20’s she began to feel empowered by her ability to make money and taking care of herself. She eventually got a little apartment and paid all her bills on time, even though she had money- she never felt loved. As a matter of fact the only “love” she was able to find was in the solace of a chocolate cake. NOT just one slice, many many slices. She never felt a man could love her because of her past, and she never felt that she could do anything OTHER than make money to eat. Food gave her EVERYTHING she needed. Warmth, security, peace, and comfort.

On Cassie’s 30th birthday she walked to the bakery near her house and saw her reflection in the mirror. At 5’3″, she weighed nearly 300 pounds, and she was NOT happy. She had prayed “to god” before to help her loose weight- but in her mind she had never had her prayers answered. She had tried Atkins, South Beach, Vegetarian, Vegan, even a church prayer group. NOTHING had worked. Her 30th birthday though was a turning point- her Doctor had just given her 3 years to live at her current rate of health, and with this startling revelation, and upon seeing her reflection in the glass… something snapped. Cassie, decided to go “ALL IN” for God, “ALL IN” for Jesus.

Deciding to by-pass the bakery, Cassie hurried home and fell on her knees. She pleaded to God to “forgive” her for not trusting Him completely. She went to Him and asked Him in her prayer NOT to “help” her to loose weight, she asked Him to show her the CAUSE of all the weight gain. WHY?!

Immediately, He showed her the abuser that was in her childhood, and the fact that after she was abused- in an attempt to get her to forgive the injustice- she would be offered a candy treat. Therefore her WHOLE life she had associated “treats” with love, forgiveness, and comfort from pain. Breaking down, she saw her abuser in a new light and asked the Lord to forgive him. She also forgave her abuser and saw through God’s Divine Revelation that candy did NOT mean comfort, it was a sign of the abuser’s guilt. It was a pattern in his life, that he had endured- and she felt genuinely sorry for him. Cassie finished praying and was RELIEVED. God had SHOWED her the source of her weight gain, she immediately started walking in forgiveness and was HEALED from within… in an instant!

If it wasn’t for this prayer time with her Father, and her complete commitment to God as her FATHER- she would have never broken-through. It wasn’t long before Cassie began to love herself, as God loved her- God saved her life that day! Cassie became FREE! Fit and HEALTHY!

  1. Real prayer warriors know “how to pray”. They understand that their is a ROOT to every problem- and that no amount of formula, manipulative or calculative praying can move God. WE are moved through prayer to God.
  2. Those who understand HOW to prayer, understand that their prayers can be simple, because God is their FATHER. He loves them- they LOVE Him.
  3. In our prayers God REVEALS things to us. Who He is (our Father), and WHY things have happened to us.
  4. Only HE can set things right for us. Revealing to us the SOURCE of our sufferings.
  5. He does for us that which He would do for us in Heaven… bring us PEACE and FREEDOM.
  6. God FEEDS us, no amount of work that we do on our own will bring us to His table.
  7. Walking with God puts us in a “forgiving” state. We forgive others, He forgives us.
  8. CONSTANT communication with God BEFORE it is too late, keeps us from the devil.
  9. HE IS IN CHARGE, and it is only through HIM that we can have “revelation”. If it is something that we can think… than it is NOT new to us! It is NOT revelation!
  10. We must ALL forgive our accusers before we can walk on into victory and begin to see our prayers answered and our needs become manifested. Walking in forgiveness = walking in and with GOD.

Father God, show our friends how REAL You are. Help them to see through You and Your Word that YOU ARE OUR FATHER. Show them Lord that a repetitive prayer of  “avoidance” without having confronted the hidden issues of the heart- will just lead them to a prescribed prayer result. We desire to WALK in prevention! Help our friends to FACE the truth. Give them the courage to ask WHY?! Why are they “fat”, why are they “unhappy”, why are they “poor”, why are they “divorced”. Give them INSIGHT into these issues- through Your Revelation power, and in this Revelation Lord, guide them to how-to-be 100% committed and INTO YOU! In Your Son Jesus’ name… AMEN!!

*Cassie is a fictional character used in this parable to illustrate HOW the revelation of God- while it may not “physically” be manifested i.e. praying and “opening our eyes to a loss of 150 pounds”, the freedom from understanding WHY things happen- puts us in a PERMANENT and restorative state.
