How Observing the Gospel Made Me Rich: *TIME 4 A CHANGE*

Wholehearted Ministries Founder, Jessica Heilman

The other day my husband Jeff and I found ourselves in the position to have to make a decision in regards to Wholehearted Ministries and the direction we were going to take. Do we compromise the “wholehearted” message in order to help spread the word… or do we continue to preach that Jesus Christ heals and restores all who choose to follow Him in wholeness- regardless of the issue? The Bible says, “He sent His Word and it healed them.” Psalm 107:20

Here at WHM we believe that GOD HAS RICHNESS in store for ALL of us! Rich spiritual lives, rich relationships, rich health, and yes- even rich bank accounts! Oh Lord, now I have done it! I have just verbally acknowledged that YES, I believe that as a believer in Christ, YOU CAN BE MADE RICH!

When I began WHM, I began it with a Word from God. A Word that reassured me that He would build a fortress around me- as long as I continued to preach the Gospel and share the Word He gave me- with you, uncompromisingly. In the last two years, I have written about the Bible and God’s point of view on all manner of modern-day and relevant subjects: sex, religion, who we are in Christ, safety, marriage, relationships, gossip, church divisions, women in ministry, men in ministry, incorrect relationships with money, correct relationships with money, our identity apart from Him, our identity with Him… the list goes on! 200+ articles on many different subjects, all with the Bible and the Holy Spirit as guide. I will always remember one of my first articles on the Azusa Street Revival and Speaking in Tongues!

Covering sensitive issues like “God wants you to be rich*” (article Feb 20, 2011) has not necessarily made me the most popular person, for in the same week I may cover infidelity, debt-free living, and that most uncomfortable attack against the sin of fornication. My only solace has been the Word from God, and the encouragement of my friends who so wonderfully send me emails of love and affirmations like: “keep up the good work!” this makes my day! Thanks friends!

Getting back to Jehovah Jireh, my provider. I was broke at 19 years old when I married Jesus. Married Him? Yes, I certainly did! I made a covenant promise with Him one day, that I would be HIS completely and forever- TOTALY SOLD OUT. Whatever His Word told me to do, I promised to do it. Whatever He asked me to do, I obeyed Him and asked if I could do MORE. He turned out to be the kindest gentleman and the deepest lover of my soul (perhaps you have married Him too?). Financially, at the time of my commitment to Christ, I had nothing. I was a college student, going to college in exchange of getting free room and board from my parents. I did not want to be in college, I had no aspirations and I had resolved to be a nobody my WHOLE life. Christ however had a different plan for me.

You see, if you SELL-OUT to follow the Gospel and Jesus, YOU CAN NOT STAY BROKE (N) FOR VERY LONG. Before I married Jesus; I was sick in my mind, sick in my soul, sick in my finances, sick in my body, and sick to the future. There was nothing for me apart from Him, and His Word HEALED ME… His Word MADE ME WHOLE!

Where is financial prosperity found in the Bible? Jesus said:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” Luke 4:18-19

Christ covers finances here in Luke, and just as sight is recovered to the blind, the gospel must be preached to the poor. Why not just “give the poor a buck or two”? Have you ever heard the adage “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime”?  It works like that. The Gospel teaches us how to run our houses financially, and thus we prosper. Like staying debt-free, paying God first, and having the  money God gives us work for us.

What most people do not realize is that their financial status is nothing more than a trailing indicator of where they are spiritually. Just as the airplane leaves a pattern in the clouds once it has past, finances are the very same. Finances are a result of your thought processes, and in order to change our thought processes you must change what you know to be true. Before I married Jesus, I thought I was a nothing and was destined to be nothing. Once I married Him and began observing His Word and His Gospel, I learned:

I can do everything through him who gives me strength. Phil 4:13

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Cor. 12:9

For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 1 Peter 1:23

And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:10-14

I NEED A BIG GOD, How bout you?

I don’t know about you, but I need a BIG GOD. I have been so messed up and tripped up in the past, that an average “ho hum” god would never do. A “hopin’-and-a’prayin” god could never cut it, a god of “good-fortune” couldn’t supply enough, a god of “over here” -no wait- “over there” wouldn’t have made any sense! I needed ONE GOD and I needed Him to be BIG enough to absolve, resolves, redeem and restore me to COMPLETE WHOLENESS. Whatever the process, I needed the WHOLE package- I needed JESUS!

Jesus, the Messiah, has many attributes. As I originally indicated, WHM was asked to compromise our message by NOT including the Jehovah-Jireh in one of our teaching sessions. My question is, if we leave out Jehovah-Jireh- what about El-Shaddai, Jehovah-Nissi, Jehovah-Rapha, El-Roi, El-Elyon? No, we could not compromise our message… and neither should you! What do you need from the Lord today? What have you asked/called on Him to do? HE IS OUR EVERYTHING!

CALL ON JESUS AND BE SAVED “And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Joel 2:32

Let’s keep “the prosperity message” simple. The Bible says that Jesus’ name is ABOVE ALL names (Phil 2:9) which means JESUS is above sickness, poverty, death, satan, demons, and destruction. Call on Jesus and you WILL BE SAVED. How did calling on Jesus “save” me? As a result of my observing the Gospel and following after Jesus Christ in action and obedience; I have been married for nearly 15 years to the most wonderful man in the world, I have 5 AMAZING children who are all brilliant in their own way, I have been retired for 14 years… and I get to do what I love. Not bad, for being a college drop-out, not bad for being “human”- but then as I have become new in Christ, my mind has become permanently warped to the possibilities found in HIS WORD- is it time for a change, for you?

*I strongly recommend the book God Wants You To Be Rich by Paul Zane Pilzer to anyone who is curious to know God’s point of view on economics, as written by a Christian economist.

God bless you friends as you continue about your day doing whatever it is God has called you to do! May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ keep you in perfect peace!
