PROSPERITY VS POVERTY
The following HOT Topic contains content that may be found inappropriate to the overly religious and close minded individual.
Day One: The Bible ‘Prosperity and Poverty’
HALLELUJAH! The Lord provides answers for us all, even those who may temporarily be “broke!” This week we are focusing our Word Study on the Bible and Luke 4:18.
Jesus is standing in the temple and has just laid out an outline for the people why He was born, why He came down to the earth. Today, we are focusing on the first…
The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. Luke 4:18
When you read the Bible, and choose to live by it, you can take the Word as a Book written just for you. Instead of reading the Word and seeing, “By His stripes you were healed” I encourage others to read it like this, “By His stripes I was healed.” When you choose to read the Bible as a personal letter, book, or document of facts as written to you by God, you will begin to unlock it’s awesome power! There is no other book that you can interpret written for yourself as a Word from God to you other than The Holy Bible!
POVERTY IS A STATE OF MIND
Jumping right into Bible study and study of Jesus words in Luke 4:18, I have left you with a bold statement, “Poverty is a state of mind.” In all our learning we have learned that poverty is an attitude, and Jesus knew this. His first “reason” for the Spirit of the Lord to have come upon Him was to, Preach the gospel to the poor. What a statement! So many people like to think that money isn’t important to God, and that we who teach “prosperity in Him” are worldly minded focused only just on money, when Jesus Christ himself says that He came to preach the gospel to the poor! Did He come with hundreds in His pocket? Where those left in poverty supposed to stay there? If people who were in lack and desperate need were to be the only ones worth entering into heaven, we have a big problem! Have you noticed that we as a globe are only getting more prosperous! We don’t even deal with the same issues we did 10 years ago, let alone 1,000 years ago! If poverty was our purpose, we would have been born clothed, with a suitcase and ended up stripped and starved to death… not the other way around!
So, what is the “gospel”?
In the Greek it is the word euaggelizo which literally is translated as “Prosperity Messenger” we know that Jesus calls it, “The acceptable year of the Lord” The year of Jubilee!
So, who are the “poor”?
In the Greek, the poor are, ptochos : destitute of wealth, influence, position, honour.
Preaching the Gospel, sharing with the poor and impoverished people about the Word of God and showing them how to read it for themselves, is the very best thing that you can do! A person who is in a state of mind focused on poverty, can not see themselves as worthy of much, if not anything at all. Helping them by preaching the Gospel to them, the “Good News” that they are now free in Christ, and heirs according to the promise, opens up the door for possibilities! When your perspective of yourself is changed, and you begin to see yourself as a child of God and royalty according to the son/daughtership of the throne, you will no longer see yourself as destitute. This attitude CAN NOT permanently change without the Word of God!
True, you can read books like “The Secret”, and repeat to yourself 1,000 times “I’m gonna be rich!” With no results… why?? Because you haven’t put your feet on solid ground! Your subconscious does not believe it, why? Cause only YOU said it to yourself! That isn’t a good enough reason! You have told yourself many things before and failed, why would you believe you now? Temporarily you may have success, but when a trial becomes too big to mount, you will remember all the promises that you failed to yourself.
HOWEVER, when you base your beliefs on The Word of God and begin to say, “I have everything I need and I am going to be RICH because in Proverbs 10:22 it says, “The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.” and in 1 Tim 5:18 it says, “The worker deserves his wages.””
When you begin to read the Word of God for yourself and set your internal thermostat to Christ, you will begin to see that the Lord has a prosperous person on His mind for you. As a matter of fact, those who do not think prosperity is in God’s plan for their finances, are denying that those who are broke have a spiritual situation that needs deliverance and ultimately deny that Christ has redeemed them from the curse of poverty.
CHRIST HAS REDEEMED YOU
Christ has redeemed you from the curse, for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” Gal 3:13. Christ was hung on a tree and became sin for us, He became poverty so that we don’t have to! I was reading a book this last summer written by a well known Rabbi, Rabbi Telushkin, that to the Jew living in poverty is a sin and that they who choose to live in it are voluntarily denying the law of sowing and reaping that was bestowed upon Abraham when God made with him His covenant. (Read Deut. 28)
REAL LIFE APPLICATION
Broke? Poor? Down to your last dime? Don’t expect a hand out. The Bible says, “A man with an evil eye hastens after wealth And does not know that want will come upon him.” Those who hasten to be rich, and ask others for their finances by going into debt, have not broken free from the poverty spirit. The poverty spirit is a spirit which encourages you not to sow and not to reap. The Lord time and time again tells us that there is a sowing, reaping, and seasoning process. He will give you all that you need when you turn to Him and ask Him for your needs to be met. But He is a jealous God and can not do anything when you continue to go to others for a quick buck. What you need is witty invention, divine favor, unmerited grace, you need Jesus! While you think you may be starving… God is waiting to remind you of that scripture in Psalm 37:25, I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
Begin to replace:
- “I am broke” with “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Phil 4:13
- “I am hungry” with “I am righteous, and the righteous have never been forsaken or been found begging for bread.” Psalm 37:25
- “I have nothing to give” with “I am useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.” 2 Tim 2:21
(There are so many others! Look in topically in The Bible for, ‘finances, money, riches, prosperity’, you will be very interested with what you find! For instance scripture says “The LOVE of money is the root of all evil”, not money is the root of all evil, money by itself is neither GOOD or BAD)
IN CLOSING TODAY
There is only one thing more powerful to you than The Word of God… and that is your traditions! We must change our tradition, our “rooted” belief system to line up with the Word of God. Deuteronomy 28 tells us over and over again, that we are to be “The head and not the tail, above and not beneath.” Do not let your traditional thinking of “The Church” or the way things out to be, cloud the Word of God and Jesus’ own words… “He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor”. Just like laying hands on the sick recovers the body, the Gospel of Christ and His Word will reverse the attitude and thinking of poverty, the more we begin to think like Him the more we will begin to see just how much the Bible talks of prosperity and invention, if you will just seek Him first (Matt 6:33). He desires for you to be whole!
God Bless you today, and God Bless Your people with freedom form the mental restraints of poverty!
*On a personal note, everyone has a different version/picture of ‘prosperity’ in their minds eye. Having everything that you need, most often means living BY FAITH. Faith is a spiritual currency, and it will bring you all that you need. Sometimes food may come in the form of a friend bringing you a meal, or another miraculous situation. We are not called to live by miracles however, we are called to live by faith. Changing the internal image of what you can do in Christ will change your economical situation- period.
