“He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe. It was He who gave* some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” Eph. 4:11-13 NIV

This scripture is perhaps the most impact full scripture in the Bible in relation to what we are called to do:

“[He] gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers”

Breaking this scripture down, we can read that according to scripture, we (you, me, the body of Christ), have been called to either deliver a message (Apostleship), tell of things to come (Prophecy), promote the Gospel (Evangelize), heard and govern the people (Pastor), or teach others about the Lord (Teacher).

With all the ‘strength finding books’, and ‘spiritual gifting’ tests aside, we can find right in the book of Ephesians, what we are called to do in just a matter of minutes. Isn’t it refreshing to know that once you have figured out our calling, your current job or profession then is considered merely your ‘current platform’ in which you are called to spread the Word?!

Five examples:

One with a gifting in the area of Apostleship, can be found extremely loyal to their message, and faithful in seeing it out to completion. Rather than just evangelize a product or service, and move on, the Apostle is the man or woman that starts out offering a product or service to another, and then fully completes the transaction. They are able to be in the project for the long haul, and are happy seeing a project come about. Apostles are very good at leadership and directing the path of others through offering a message of hope. An Apostle will hear a message, have revelation, or see where things need to change and then will deliver it. They will take that message to the people, and the people will be eager to hear of it. Then they will stay and develop a system of support. (Think businessmen, entrepreneurs)

It is in my experience, that one who is called into Prophecy, will more than likely be naturally gifted as a musician or in the arts. They find in their hearts a burning desire to sing, play, or tell through acting out stories, things to come. They enjoy showing others, from beginning to end, the cause and effects of what happens when you act in a particular way. They desire in essence to prophecy to others happy, sad, comedy, tragedy, so that others will learn by the example of their character ‘How to be or not to be’. They are using their Prophetic gift, to tell a story. (One can think that the most gifted musicians are the ones that are Prophetically gifted. Unfortunately, there are some who use this gift to succeed by spreading the wrong message. These entertainers, will be judged in their unrighteousness, they have taken this gift from God, and not renewed their minds in Christ and through their lustful desire to contort the message of God, they end up using their platform for selfish desires (none of us are exempt), and are in turn living persecuted until death because of it.)

The Evangelist is one who comes into your life, rather briefly, and gets you excited for change. They fire you up and empower you with encouragement for the future. The “Rah! Rah! Rah!” you feel as they leave you, is enough for you to change your life and motivates you to win! The one with a gift of evangelism is not one to linger, and will constantly be moving in the direction in which he is headed. (I think often of successful public speakers, in this role, as they have mastered the art of coming into town and delivering a message and then leaving.)

Believe it or not, those who have a Pastoring gift, are extremely suited for politics or Presidency in a business or company. The Pastor will be localized, and able to stay in a particular area geographically suited for the spreading of their message. They will remain in the area that they feel called to, and are content to remain their indefinitely. They often rally their communities to a cause, and are successful at getting groups of people to do things based on loyalty. (I would go so far as to say that a gang leader has a natural Pastoring ability, and while he is Pastoring the wrong message, he is in fact Pastoring. As a matter of fact, I have heard from Pastors with prison ministries, that most of our prisons are filled with Pastors/Preachers that the enemy was so threatened with, he attempted to lead them astray from their youth. However when they get saved in prison, end up being released, they end up becoming some of the best Pastors! They had never recognized that they were called to Preach, or had ignored their calling, but it had naturally had manifested anyway. Praise God for His forgiveness!)

You guessed it, I am a teacher. I am a teacher because I write books, and speak in public in a teaching sort of way. It has always been my desire to take the Word and make it understandable to everyone. I do not believe that the Bible is a message that only the smart people should understand. I believe, that people are best taught in stories, and through example. Teachers believe that if you can work at delivering a message clearly to others, they will understand it. Ever since I was a little girl I taught my dolls to do things, and my friends. I had always thought I was going to be a school teacher when I grew up. Now I teach others about the Word of God, and it is the most fulfilling work for me.

So what does it matter? Here is how it works, it is in my understanding, that every single job, and success story, can be rooted into one of these five above mentioned ‘gifts’**. What it matters, is that as soon as you discover for yourself which one you naturally have been given you will be able to do the best on the job that you are currently assigned to. Your job, whatever it is, from store clerk to car washer, is your current platform to spread the message of hope and the Good News. My life took off, when I stopped writing books of fiction, and started writing about the Word of God and how to live in peace.

One of the problems in the Body of Christ, is that we have a lot of people that are called to be Pastors, who think that they should Evangelize. Maybe the travel, or fame is more glamours to them, so they try and Evangelize and fail. When in reality, if they would stay where they are at and lead the people around them, they would be a greater success than any ordinary Evangelist. We also have Christians who are in businesses via their inclination to Apostleship, but they go and try and record albums themselves, instead of supporting the Prophet who should be the one doing the singing! The devil has had fun mixing us up! NOT ANY MORE!

It is the Lord’s intention, that we discover our calling, in order that we “prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

My husband has been called into professional sports. The Lord has confirmed this message, again and again. We have prayed about it, and sought consul on it, and we know that golf is just the platform to EVANGELIZE the message of the Lord. If you know Jeff at all, you know he is an Evangelist! So I asked my brothers and sisters to stand in agreement with me, that Jeff would win the victory in the battlefield of his tournament, not for money- there is no purse today, but so that we can positively use his natural gift of athleticism (as King David had for music), to spread the message to athletes and aspiring athletes every where, that God has not forgotten them… and that anything is possible for those who believe….

(**The Eph. 4 ‘gifts’ are known in the greek as doma something given by God. The Romans 12 ‘gifts’ are known in the greek as ‘charisma’ these are gifts given by the Holy Spirit)
