An Article for the Ages: Abraham Lincoln Speaks

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Galatians 5:23

temperance |ˈtemp(ə)rəns| : moderation or self-restraint

AN ARTICLE FOR THE AGES

As I sat down to write this morning, my first entry in nearly a month, I thought to myself “I want to write an article for the ages.” (No pressure) Then EUREKA! The message came to me, and low and behold, it wasn’t written by me at all!

Temperance Address

Springfield, Illinois
February 22, 1842
Abraham Lincoln

“The cause itself seems suddenly transformed from a cold abstract theory, to a living, breathing, active, and powerful chieftain, going forth “conquering and to conquer.”

….

The preacher, it is said, advocates temperance because he is a fanatic, and desires a union of the Church and State; the lawyer, from his pride and vanity of hearing himself speak; and the hired agent, for his salary. But when one, who has long been known as a victim of intemperance bursts the fetters that have bound him, and appears before his neighbors “clothed, and in his right mind,” a redeemed specimen of long-lost humanity, and stands up with tears of joy trembling in his eyes, to tell of the miseries once endured, now to be endured no more forever; of his once naked and starving children, now clad and fed comfortably; of a wife long weighed down with woe, weeping, and a broken heart, now restored to health, happiness, and a renewed affection; and how easily it is all done, once it is resolved to be done; how simple his language, there is a logic, and an eloquence in it, that few, with human feelings, can resist.

They cannot say that he desires a union of church and state, for he is not a church member; they cannot say he is vain of hearing himself speak, for his whole demeanor shows he would gladly avoid speaking at all; they cannot say he speaks for pay for he receives none, and asks for none. Nor can his sincerity in any way be doubted; or his sympathy for those he would persuade to imitate his example be denied.

….

To have expected them to do otherwise than they did — to have expected them not to meet denunciation with denunciation, crimination with crimination, and anathema with anathema, was to expect a reversal of human nature, which is God’s decree, and never can be reversed.

When the conduct of men is designed to be influenced, persuasion, kind, unassuming persuasion, should ever be adopted. It is an old and a true maxim, that a “drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of gall.” So with men. If you would win a man to your cause, first convince him that you are his sincere friend.

Therein is a drop of honey that catches his heart, which, say what he will, is the great highroad to his reason, and which, when once gained, you will find but little trouble in convincing his judgment of the justice of your cause, if indeed that cause really be a just one. On the contrary, assume to dictate to his judgment, or to command his action, or to mark him as one to be shunned and despised, and he will retreat within himself, close all the avenues to his head and his heart; and though your cause be naked truth itself, transformed to the heaviest lance, harder than steel, and sharper than steel can be made, and though you throw it with more than Herculean force and precision, you shall be no more be able to pierce him, than to penetrate the hard shell of a tortoise with a rye straw.

Such is man, and so must he be understood by those who would lead him, even to his own best interest.

….

But with all these glorious results, past, present, and to come, it had its evils too. It breathed forth famine, swam in blood and rode in fire; and long, long after, the orphan’s cry, and the widow’s wail, continued to break the sad silence that ensued.

These were the price, the inevitable price, paid for the blessings it bought.

Turn now, to the temperance revolution. In it, we shall find a stronger bondage broken; a viler slavery, manumitted; a greater tyrant deposed. In it, more of want supplied, more disease healed, more sorrow assuaged. By it no orphans starving, no widows weeping. By it, none wounded in feeling, none injured in interest. Even the dram-maker, and dram seller, will have glided into other occupations so gradually, as never to have felt the change; and will stand ready to join all others in the universal song of gladness.

And what a noble ally this, to the cause of political freedom. With such an aid, its march cannot fail to be on and on, till every son of earth shall drink in rich fruition, the sorrow quenching draughts of perfect liberty. Happy day, when, all appetites controlled, all poisons subdued, all matter subjected, mind, all conquering mind, shall live and move the monarch of the world. Glorious consummation! Hail fall of Fury! Reign of Reason, all hail!

And when the victory shall be complete — when there shall be neither a slave nor a drunkard on the earth — how proud the title of that Land, which may truly claim to be the birth-place and the cradle of both those revolutions, that shall have ended in that victory. How nobly distinguished that People, who shall have planted, and nurtured to maturity, both the political and moral freedom of their species.

This is the one hundred and tenth anniversary of the birth-day of Washington. We are met to celebrate this day. Washington is the mightiest name of earth — long sincemightiest in the cause of civil liberty; still mightiest in moral reformation. On that name, an eulogy is expected. It cannot be. To add brightness to the sun, or glory to the name of Washington, is alike impossible. Let none attempt it. In solemn awe pronounce the name, and in its naked deathless splendor, leave it shining on.”

” Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:4-8

May God continue to bless you dear friends as you partake in the Temperance Revolution,

This Will Be My Last Article… For A While

” I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me, YOU CAN TOO.” – Jessica Heilman

LET’S GET TO IT

Let’s get right down to it. Jesus DID NOT die on the cross so you could be a couch potato. Jesus died so that you could throw up the bile of this world, and begin drinking from the fountain of His living water. What does it mean to be a believer in Christ? It means that we look to the cross and His death and resurrection to meet and fulfill ALL of our needs according to His riches and Glory.

Jesus did not die such a gruesome, horrifying, sacrificial death so that you could be bound to pornography, sex, drugs, alcohol abuse, depression, over-indulgence, and all other perverted lusts of the flesh. Jesus’ life was given on the cross, NAILED to it to be on display in front of all mankind in LOVE, so that you could be free to FINALLY smell the roses that God created, WALK in the waters of the ocean that God designed, and BREATHE the air of eternal life. The eternal life of LOVE that ushers us into relationship with our Father, as His new born babes… FOREVER.

Look at a baby, has it sinned? Does it have any fears, inhibitions, or experiences BEYOND what it is told? NO

How is your walk… are you as a baby when comes to the things of God, crawling to Him and reaching up to Him as your parent? Trading the babbling of this nonsensical world for His Divine language? Or do you STRIDE like a man? Cocky and confident in your brashness, so sure of yourself and YOUR power that you disregard His instructions as foolishness? What can God do with a man who will not listen? NOTHING. Pride of man will leave the man to walk in his own shoes, until that man walks straight into homelessness, hopelessness, and is burdened by his pride until he is eventually minimized from existence into his own prison of forced and embarrassed humiliations. The man who will not listen, has allowed satan’s pride to drive him out of God’s bosom and into the pit of hell – a life separated from God.

NOT AN ORDINARY MESSAGE- THE MESSAGE

I figured that if you opened this link, you were curious to hear my last words … for how long I do not now. So with you as a captive audience, I have decided to allow the message of the blood of the cross to captivate you in your curiosities of what is going on with me. It is NOT about me, it is about YOU and your relationship with CHRIST.

What is going on with me, is that I am in the process of being shaped and molded into a full time representation of an outward expression of an on fire life-style evangelism. I am a follower of Christ who has been gifted with a book given to me directly FROM GOD that needs to be finished. The finishing of this book is my new #1 priority, outside that of blessing my husband and my children. What this means to those who have enjoyed being a part of Wholehearted Ministries is no more Facebook, no more writing, no more tweeting. You have been given so many great resources… I suggest you use them! I will be back, but as a new person. An achiever of a goal that has taken a lifetime to reach. There is a good work to be done with my life, and I intend to do it. Jesus the Christ died for me- SO I DON’T HAVE TO. I am His, and as my Lover of my soul- He is instructing me that, “Now is the time! I can do no more service writing to the likes of man, when I have a manuscript intended for the Nations.”

I ASK YOU FOR NOTHING

I ask you for NOTHING out of this; no offering’s, no donations, no prayers. NOTHING. ALL I expect is that your heart would read these words as my final send-off, and that you would correct any sinful behavior and take it to the cross. Allow the blood of Jesus into your veins and let Him mold you and conform you to His perfect WILL. Whatever you are dealing with, is what you are suffering from. For a sin that has been kept, is a sin that incubates. Choose to live free today friends, confess your sin- repent to Christ and begin living like a baby in the sight of the Father, He only has His perfect LOVE in store for you.

God bless you my friends,

Who Are the Right People to Pitch To?…How & Why YOU Should Read More

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. Proverbs 27:17 NLT

READING FOR A CHANGE

“Leaders are readers”, it is a simple statement but it is true. Leading others takes a tremendous amount of input and output, but maybe not for the reason you may think. When I talk to others about reading and personal growth, I often can begin to see their eyes glazing over. It is as if they thought that after college, there was no more need for reading.

What is the purpose of reading? The purpose of reading the Bible is so that we can begin to understand the language God speaks, and therefore when He speaks to us- WE WILL HEAR HIM, “The sheep know the Shepherd’s voice.” It is just as important to read books that expand our thinking from others that have spent perhaps their entire lives thinking, growing, and reprogramming their minds for the overcoming of the trials and tribulations in life.

Personally, I know that without the countless marriage books and leadership driven books that I have read- I wouldn’t be HALF the person I am today. Even the reading of the Bible can be turned inward (only reading it for personal gain), whereas when you couple reading the Bible with reading books written by other men and women of God who have written books to encourage… it really causes you to take your eyes off of yourself! Hallelujah! After all, the Bible says, “The testimony of Jesus IS the Spirit of Prophecy” Rev. 19:10. Reading testimonies and experiences written by others to encourage you, is both beneficial and required for your sustained success in life!

The sad truth is that not many people have “iron sharpening friends”. Most people were born at one sanction in life, and then stay there never moving ahead in their abilities or responsibilities. What happens when we read books by “winners”, is that we begin to see ourselves in their inner circle, with their friends, having their experiences. As you do this, and expose yourself to a myriad of different authors who have been put on this earth to develop others, your circle of influence will change.

WATCH WHAT YOU READ

Just because a book says it is “Christian”, doesn’t mean necessarily that it is. Do your research, make your OWN book list. Some “successful” people are successful with NO explanation, their biographies are more or less blank. We try and stay away from these types of authors. If it appears to be a “fad” it probably is. If a person has a book out for the first time, read up on their life before hand, what can you find out about them? What is on their website? If you have found them out to be open and forth right in their statement of beliefs… than go for it! If not, then steer clear, books are not just about WHAT you read… they are WHO you hang out with!

A NEW COMMITMENT

In addition to writing, I have started a new reading commitment, and in this commitment, I am committed  to setting a goal of reading 50 pages a day. Here are the nine books that I am starting out with and their page numbers:

  1. Just As I Am, Billy Graham, 865
  2. Thinking For a Change, John C. Maxwell, 257
  3. Christ the Healer, F.F. Bosworth, 247
  4. Decision Points, George W. Bush, 481
  5. The Circle of Innovation, Tom Peters, 499
  6. Developing the Leaders Around You, John C. Maxwell, 213
  7. Created for Excellence, Kevin Baerg, 187
  8. The Quick & Easy Way to Effective speaking, Dale Carnegie, 218
  9. Rediscovering the Kingdom, Myles Monroe, 227

I must admit that it was 11:30pm when I finished reading last night, and Billy Graham was getting more and more distant as I was starting to nod off, but I did it and I am excited to do it again! These authors are becoming my friends! How good is it to know Jesus? AWESOME! Just as reading the Gospel gives you THE MOST powerful association, having friends like John Maxwell and Dale Carnegie… what a blessing, let me tell you!! Who are you “associating” with? Have they done anything truly GREAT?

THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO PITCH TO

While reading yesterday, this statement stood out:

“When you expose an idea to the right people, incredible things can happen. The original thought often grows, along with its vision, power, and impact. Who are the RIGHT people to stretch a vision? They are the ones who LOVE you and embrace your vision, who know you and strengthen your vision, and who complement you and enlarge your vision. They are the few who stretch a thought before you and land it with many.

The people in your life impact your thinking, for better or for worse, so why not work strategically to find people who will stretch your potential? Make it a goal to find people who will add value to you in areas that are important to you. (And make yourself available to do the same for others.) This will take your thinking to a whole NEW level.” page 41, Thinking For a Change- John C. Maxwell

Contrary to popular belief, you DO NOT need to find the most intelligent, richest, connected people in this world to share your ideas with. All you need is to find those who love you and support you, and let them help you come up with something extremely special. It might be your Pastor, a friend, a sibling, a parent. Begin sharing your vision with the right people today, and quit looking JUST for the “gifted”, you might be over looking the right team… right where you are at!

If you are having trouble getting yourself to read try these tips:

Tony Robbins once taught that we must associate the feeling of pleasure whenever we face a task that we may not want to do. If your usual feeling response toward reading is a negative one, you will be less likely to do it. However, if you can begin instilling and triggering in yourself a positive reaction in the area of reading, you will be more apt to do so, here are some of my tips:

  • DESSERT = READING: Have a cup of coffee or tea and indulge in a cookie or two when you sit to read. Reserve your dessert until reading time only.
  • WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE TV IS OFF?: Turn off the TV at least 2 nights a week, eventually you will want to fill that time up with SOMETHING (try reading!).
  • BOOKSTORE BLISS: Go to the Bookstore and read there.
  • PAGES READ = CHUCK E CHEESE?: Kids read when they see their parents read, start a FAMILY reading chart and see who can read the most books first. Have a reward set at a certain page number for the WHOLE crew.
  • A SPOT SET ASIDE: Set the morning alarm early, and find a place. Find a place in your home where you can snuggle up but remain alert.
  • SUNNY DAYS ARE HERE AT LAST: Put a chair under a window, and sit in the sun when you read.
  • CAR UNIVERSITY: Read out loud to the family in the car, I have had the opportunity to read hundreds of books as my husband drives along, it does us BOTH good!
